East Timor
On my February 2004 trip to East Timor, I happened upon two species, which have only reported in East Timor since 2002. The first species is the Sooty-headed Bulbul, Pycnonotus aurigaster (pictures 1-2). These two were found near the Dili Airport. This species was first reported in 1997 from the Kupang area of West Timor. Jon Hornbuckle also recorded this species in 2001 in West Timor. Colin Trainor has reported that it was first seen in East Timor in 2002. The other species is the Pale-headed Munia, Lonchura pallida (pictures 3-10). A small flock of 6 were found in a coastal field at Tasi Tolu. It had long perplexed scientists why this resident on the West Timor outliers of Roti and Dau and the East had never been recorded in East Timor. Colin Trainor notes that it was first seen in West Timor around Kupang in 1997 first noted in East Timor in 2002. In 2003, Colin noted a flock of 300 individuals. Colin has a great website about birds and birding in East Timor. This can be found at http://www.turismotimorleste.com/en/activities/birdwatching/
